Biography

Hi, I'm the director of The 1 Second Film. You can follow me on twitter here: twitter.com/the1secondfilm or check out my blog for the latest production updates.

Before starting this project, I made a few other animated short films, like this stop-motion called The Box Man:

I started making The 1 Second Film while studying Experimental Animation at CalArts, but the seed of the idea formed before then while I was studying philosophy at a school called New College.

I was reading a book called Nausea and came across an idea of "perfect moments." This got me to thinking about the power of small moments, and I began explore creative ways to compress a lot of time into trying to make one. This led me to experiment with animation, where you can compress hundreds of hours into a single second. While making my first animated film, I began to imagine spending a lifetime creating one-second of film. The trick would be to enjoy the process along the way.

With this weird idea in my mind, I eventually landed at CalArts, where this project found its collaborative structure.

The original idea for this film was to bring all the art programs at the school together for one second, to celebrate the collaborative process of creating art. Friends helped organize a big mulit-disciplinary art party where we painted 12 large murals that form the one-second of animation (preview here).

After graduating, the idea developed into a 5 Phase Plan to make longer animated films by scaling the collaborative method up while addressing various social issues. That motivated me to grow the project beyond my school, so in 2004, I made this flier and began pitching the idea to people on the streets, fundraising $1 at a time.

The support since then has been amazing, allowing this project to grow.

If you want to read more about the project's development, check out our story.

I want to thank everyone who has become a part of this project; without each and every one of you, this film would be next to nothing :)

Why I'm producing The 1 Second Film:

What has kept me going is the level of support this has received- not just financially, but also creatively; all the little things everyone has shared have been really inspiring; from the 12 frames of animation to all the perfect moments our producers have shared. Art can bring people together in amazing ways. I also want to lay a foundation for the sequels, which is the primary motivation for trying to create a tipping-point.

Some things I'm doing to help make this film:

i have become a geek.

Perfect Moment

I keep changing moments, but here is one that came to mind recently.

I grew up in a small town in Florida. When I was 12, the local firefighters took a bunch of us kids down to Miami to see a football game. We had the nosebleed seats at the very top of the stadium; we could actually look over our shoulders and see the parking lot down below.

Everyone had been given these programs made of a heavy glossy card stock; lots of people were folding them into paper airplanes and tossing them down to see how far they would go.

I spent quite a bit of time folding my plane, making sure it was perfectly symmetrical. Then I gave it a toss.

It curved, soared, and caught some sort of current making it over the first tier. As it kept going, more people started to notice it, pointing it out to other people.

The plane kept curving, and doing tricks; when it did a flip, you could tell how many people were watching it by the audible "ooooh."

Soon it felt like everyone in the stadium was watching it. As it got closer and closer to the field, people started cheering the plane on.

Then it flew across the entire field, right over the players heads. The entire stadium went nuts and actually gave the plane a standing ovation!

Best moment ever.

The firefighters and my friends all gave me high fives. It was totally unexpected and totally awesome.

Just checking in.

Nirvan,

Thought I'd check in and see how things were going with yourself and the project. Been some big developments over here at Croyle Entertainment, such as a new playwrighting competition and all -- and a fall shoot for first short, and I figured we were all due for some here at the 1 Second Film! Hope all is going well with everything. Let me know what's up if you get some time. Anything I can do to help, just let me know. Nothing but the best, as always.

Your Producer,

Matt

Thanks!

Got your email. Thanks so much!

Youth Sides Media

Hey Nirvan,

I appreciate the feedback about the program (www.youthsidesmedia.org) It's still in its development phase as I'm seeking out people who want to help out and schools that are interested. Is there some way The Collaboration Foundation could help or can you offer me some advice as to how to get it off the ground finally. My issue is equipment and just dedicated volunteers. Hit me up via email!

Across the ocean

Spreading the word from this part of the world ;)

Peace, tammy

I love when people try to actually do something in the world. Glad to help, glad to be on board.

Laura

Your welcome :)

I am not quiet sure if WoW would be...in some aspects I can see it spreading the word, but if anyone would donate I am not so sure.
I could create a guild...and any potential members or ppl who are already members may join the guild.
It's one of those easier said than done things. I can give it a shot though...I am not sure what the the success rate of it will be.
But it couldn't hurt.
.::Scarlett::.

thanx

no problem! how long in the making is this project? i've seen pics of people holding producer creds that date back to 2005. i'm kinda late jumping on this bandwagon...but at least i'm on it. ;-)

Your Perfect Moment.

I've read your moment several times and I must say...I felt as if I was there...I could feel the energy in your writing...it was awesome!
This could def. be put into a movie somewhere...either as a flashback, opening sequence, or just a little blip, but it would be awesome either way!

.::Scarlett::.

P.S. Thank-you for making all of this possible! Your a great man!

Comment.

Thank-you for the comment! ^_^
Yeah I bet he is pretty awesome XD
Lucky guys...lol.
Oh well, I wish everyone the best!
Have a great night!

I will gladly hold your lens...

It has been a long time since I graduated with my degree in Radio, Television and Film from California State University, Northridge. But I haven't forgotten anything… probably because I didn't learn anything but let us not go there. I look forward to helping “The 1 Second Film” become a big success. So far, I've only donated $1. I feel cheap… so very cheap!

Yours Truly, and I mean it, big hug...

Matty

Hi Nirvan!

This really is incredible - so proud to have been a part...even if it mainly consisted of giving Mike 2 bucks (even though I thought he was kidding) :) and then following along with your journey!

A wonderful idea and really a great way to bring people together!! Happy New Year!

Your perfect moment...

Nirvan,

I've read your perfect moment multiple times now...it's beautifully written. I feel like I was there. What a moment! And what a great opening for a film or a short film in itself. Thanks for sharing -- I enjoy reading your perfect moment when I need a pick-me-up or a shot of inspiration.

All the best,
Penny

Thanks!

Thanks very much for the comment Nirvan. Excellent Idea that you have here!

Wow

It's really amazing what's gone on.
I don't know if I really can believe it.

safe & thrilling journey

Last nite's bon voyage must have been a scream...I was there in spirit wishing for you & your crew a safe & thrilling journey!!! Looking forward to crossing paths in the near future. Be well dear ones. . .Cheering from the wings* xoxo

smoke eyes mcgee.

yeah, i wanted to take one with the card, but our printer here at work sucks and i am sans a personal printer. one day. one day. IDEA! maybe i'll just write THE 1 SECOND FILM really big in black marker on a piece of paper and take a picture with that. cool? yes.
ps: do you know of one Billy the Mime? anyhow, i'm hoping to muster the courage to ask him to be a producer. we'll see. i'm all talk most of the time. but i thought it'd be cool if he had one for billy the mime and then one for himself (steven banks, his actual self). i'll be in touch. speaking of which, how should he do that if he were to want to? give it to me and i'll let you know or should he do it all online? i wish i had a camera, 'cause the coolest would be to get him to do a bit of mime for ya'.

HAvilah

Boston TV press

Hey Nirvan, if you guys come through Boston on your "tour" I could probabaly hook you up with an interview on CN8 - The Comcast Network in Brookline, MA - if you have a press kit, or any video we could use for b-roll stuff, I''d be ideal. Drop me a comment and let me know what's happening, or if it's possible. They've got an entertainment news show that I'm sure would dig the project if we pitch you guys comming in.

yo nirvan
