Michael Alexander "Alex" Howell was born in 2006 to Kim and Brent Howell of Harned, Kentucky. Before turning a year old, Alex was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, the most common malignant liver tumor in children. After battling his disease for over a year with little progress, Alex's parents switched to an experimental treatment in hopes of not only helping their son, but helping other children with the same disease. Alex was the honorary chairperson for the Breckinridge County Relay for Life, and Harned United Methodist Church, where his family attends, named their team in honor of the toddler. Alex passed away on August 4, 2008, at the age of two. Alex leaves behind many family members, including older brother Joey, older sister Jill, and baby brother Adam. More importantly, Alex leaves behind a legacy in the hundreds (maybe even thousands) of lives he touched in a life tragically cut short.
