Biography

Hi, I'm the director of The 1 Second Film. You can follow me on twitter here: twitter.com/the1secondfilm or check out my blog for the latest production updates.

You can see some of my other projects at nirvan.com. Before starting The 1 Second Film project, I made a few other animated shorts. Here is one of them:

I started making The 1 Second Film while studying Experimental Animation at CalArts, but the seed of the idea formed before then while I was studying philosophy at a school called New College.

I was reading a book called Nausea and came across an idea of "perfect moments." This got me to thinking about the power of small moments, and I began explore creative ways to compress a lot of time into trying to make one. This led me to experiment with animation, where you can compress hundreds of hours into a single second. While making my first animated film, I began to imagine spending a lifetime creating one-second of film. The trick would be to enjoy the process along the way.

With this weird idea in my mind, I eventually landed at CalArts, where this project found its collaborative structure.

The original idea for this film was to bring all the art programs at the school together for one second, to celebrate the collaborative process of creating art. Friends helped organize a big mulit-disciplinary art party where we painted 12 large murals that form the one-second of animation (preview here).

After graduating, the idea developed into a 5 Phase Plan to make longer animated films by scaling the collaborative method up while addressing various social issues. That motivated me to grow the project beyond my school, so in 2004, I made this flier and began pitching the idea to people on the streets, fundraising $1 at a time.

The support since then has been amazing, allowing this project to grow.

If you want to read more about the project's development, check out our story.

I want to thank everyone who has become a part of this project; without each and every one of you, this film would be next to nothing :)

Why I'm producing The 1 Second Film:

What has kept me going is the level of support this has received- not just financially, but also creatively; all the little things everyone has shared have been really inspiring; from the 12 frames of animation to all the perfect moments our producers have shared. Art can bring people together in amazing ways. I also want to lay a foundation for the sequels, which is the primary motivation for trying to create a tipping-point.

Some things I'm doing to help make this film:

i have become a geek.

Perfect Moment

I keep changing moments, but here is one that came to mind recently.

I grew up in a small town in Florida. When I was 12, the local firefighters took a bunch of us kids down to Miami to see a football game. We had the nosebleed seats at the very top of the stadium; we could actually look over our shoulders and see the parking lot down below.

Everyone had been given these programs made of a heavy glossy card stock; lots of people were folding them into paper airplanes and tossing them down to see how far they would go.

I spent quite a bit of time folding my plane, making sure it was perfectly symmetrical. Then I gave it a toss.

It curved, soared, and caught some sort of current making it over the first tier. As it kept going, more people started to notice it, pointing it out to other people.

The plane kept curving, and doing tricks; when it did a flip, you could tell how many people were watching it by the audible "ooooh."

Soon it felt like everyone in the stadium was watching it. As it got closer and closer to the field, people started cheering the plane on.

Then it flew across the entire field, right over the players heads. The entire stadium went nuts and actually gave the plane a standing ovation!

Best moment ever.

The firefighters and my friends all gave me high fives. It was totally unexpected and totally awesome.

Greetings from Canada

I just made my donation today to garner a Producer credit. This is such a great idea. Keep up the good work. Look forward to seeing how this all ends up, and the projects that will come of it in the future.

Thanks Cory! Hope you stick around. We are gonna need a lot/little help... a 'lottle.' new word.

'Bringing people together, for 1 second.'

You've Got Props!

Stupid subject line, trust me I know, lol, anyways, awesome concept for the this film! I'll definitely be contributing to the 2 second film... all the way to the 1 millionth second. Oh btw, I can't wait to check out The Man in the Flying Lawnchair! Any details on when it'll be out?! Looks very promising!

great, we need a propmaster!

great, we need a propmaster! We will also definitely need help with the sequels; if you want to help with the sequels, just fill in your volunteer form in your account settings. The bigger we can make this 1 second film, the better the various sequels will be. it's all about scaling up and building a strong foundation.

The Flying Lawnchair will probably go into production after I finish this, but I'm pretty excited about it. Thanks for checking it out.

Hey Nirvan...

sorry to hear that your ticket to hawaii expired brotha...you can catch some pretty decent rates though from la at any given time...Aloha is probably best for this as they often do last minute specials...you just have to sign up for their newsletter.

I've only been a part of A Swarm of Angels for about two weeks, but have already tried to become active and participate. I'm all about communal filmmaking and supporting the act of true independence...it's difficult out here on Maui...but after 4 years here, I'm finally meeting some very cool people who are into it as well...

Filmmaking is all about community...and I love spending a second every day at The 1 Second Film as a part of that community...

Just doing my best to keep up the movement. You know I feel strong about this project and I can't wait to see it on the big screen. What a development! I really feel like I'm part of history and so does everyone else. Jerry sends his regards.

You welcome.

There is no need to thank Me at all, like I say on my page I am just putting my little grain of sugar on this.

The best of luck for you guys.

Road Trip To Oprah!

Here's an idea... when you guys take that Road Trip to Oprah, we need to build a stage atop the bio-diesel bus and have the Evangenitals play motivational songs all along the route. We could make a whole album about the One Second Film, perfect moments, Keifer Sutherland's darkness inside, and the battle of Tom and Andy. It'll be legendary!

I want in. This is revolutionary stuff, here. I'm so happy to be a part of it.

A Long Overdue Update

Hey Nirvan, how's it going? Been meaning to write you for a few weeks - finally made it down to L.A.! I live in North Hollywood, and while I'm really bummed I wasn't able to make your last two events at Mr. T's, I look forward to more in the future. I also ticked the volunteer boxes, because I haven't contributed in a while, and I'm looking to change that. Hope all is well with you and yours, and I'll try and remember to send an e-mail tonight with more lengthy (perhaps "even more lengthy" is more accurate? ;)) tidings.

Congrats on the bus, dude. It's all coming together, and it's all amazing.

If you're ever on Long Island or NH...

I go to Hofstra University out there, and would love to help you guys out! I'm from NH, so ditto for that!!

Boston TV press

Hey Nirvan, if you guys come through Boston on your "tour" I could probabaly hook you up with an interview on CN8 - The Comcast Network in Brookline, MA - if you have a press kit, or any video we could use for b-roll stuff, I''d be ideal. Drop me a comment and let me know what's happening, or if it's possible. They've got an entertainment news show that I'm sure would dig the project if we pitch you guys comming in.

Thanks for the Welcome & Invite to the Cabaret:)

Hi Nirvan!
I'm shooting a few scenes for a pilot on the 30th. . .thou perhaps I can stop by when we are wrapped:) The shoot is in Glendale. . .so it's close to the Armory. Hope our paths cross soon. Many blessings, Cali

smoke eyes mcgee.

yeah, i wanted to take one with the card, but our printer here at work sucks and i am sans a personal printer. one day. one day. IDEA! maybe i'll just write THE 1 SECOND FILM really big in black marker on a piece of paper and take a picture with that. cool? yes.
ps: do you know of one Billy the Mime? anyhow, i'm hoping to muster the courage to ask him to be a producer. we'll see. i'm all talk most of the time. but i thought it'd be cool if he had one for billy the mime and then one for himself (steven banks, his actual self). i'll be in touch. speaking of which, how should he do that if he were to want to? give it to me and i'll let you know or should he do it all online? i wish i had a camera, 'cause the coolest would be to get him to do a bit of mime for ya'.

Your perfect moment...

Nirvan,

I've read your perfect moment multiple times now...it's beautifully written. I feel like I was there. What a moment! And what a great opening for a film or a short film in itself. Thanks for sharing -- I enjoy reading your perfect moment when I need a pick-me-up or a shot of inspiration.

All the best,
Penny

Hi Nirvan!

This really is incredible - so proud to have been a part...even if it mainly consisted of giving Mike 2 bucks (even though I thought he was kidding) :) and then following along with your journey!

A wonderful idea and really a great way to bring people together!! Happy New Year!

Video Post

Thanks Nirvan. Even the little things like that make a difference. Glad you liked the video. Hope all is good on your end. Keep up the great work, man. Peace. Later.
