Once The 1 Second Film is completed, we hope to raise as much as we can for our charitable beneficiary. Money will be raised by auctioning the original artwork, and by selling DVDs and collectible ancillary merchandice. Profits will be donated to the Global Fund for Women.
The 12 frames of animation that create The 1 Second Film were painted at California Institute of the Arts on March 8th, 2001 (International Women's Day). The one-second of experimental animation depicts a partially nude woman and provides an artistic platform for addressing the depiction of women's sexuality in the media.
When you reduce a film to a single moment, it can take on a heightened importance. Media and advertising often reduce women to objectified images of sexuality to sell or market the latest cars, gadgets, movie, etc. What exists beyond the frame of a moment?
Art can provide a powerful platform for expression. Each frame of The 1 Second Film had its own artistic director, allowing multiple perspectives on a single moment. For the voice of the woman in the one-second of animation, we plan to collect audio submissions from our thousands of producers saying the word "one," and compressing the voices into the one-second of audio.
