Last weekend I watched "I Am Cuba" by Mikhail Kalatozov. Russian film shot in Cuba in 1964, shortly after the revolution. An absolutely stunning film visually. The whole tone and pace were incredibly beautiful. Anyone else seen this?

Tue, 05/18/2010 - 8:09pm

Pulp Fiction was the last movie I watched. I'd never seen it before, so I figured I had to see it at least once, it was definitely worth it. I still don't get what was supposed to be in the briefcase though! -.-'

As for producers in here being involved.. I don't think anyone is. Who knows though. : P

Back in 1963 before the world became a darker place on a fateful day in Dallas, a new TV Series made its debut.
It told the story of a good man on the run from the law.
Dr. Richard Kimble had been heard arguing with his wife one night over adoption options since Helen Kimble couldn't have children. She became intoxicated and abusive. Richard left the house and went to sit by a nearby lake. He saw a small boy there fishing. After his anger left him he drove back to his home, but as he drove down his street, he almost hit a man running across the street, a man coming from his house, a man with only one arm.
Going inside the house, he found his wife Helen, dead. She'd been murdered. Richard Kimble was arrested, tried and convicted of the murder of his wife.
Then came the sentence, but during the transfer to Death Row, "Fate moved it's huge hand".

My present? Every episode of "The Fugitive", from "The Girl From Little Egypt" to "The Judgement".
Can you say Fugitive marathon? :)

Man on Wire
Milk
The Wrestler
Wall-E

..........

Milk and The Wrestler I saw recently.

I thought Milk was an incredible story, and a pretty amazing film- especially for a bio-pic.

And the Wrestler was solid. Really great performances + cinematography.

Last week I heard an interview on NPR with the director, Darren Aronofsky. I was going to grab a sandwich before driving cross town, but the interview was so interesting that I skipped the sandwich and kept driving - I didn't want to get out of my car.

I was really amazed at how much of the dialogue was improvised- all the interactions in the grocery store were with real customers.

After I got across town, I was starving and the interview was still on, so I went to a taco-bell drive thru and ate fast food for the first time in about 5 years, just so I could keep listening to the radio!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eden_Project

Last night I went and saw a viewing of the documentary about “the eden project” by robin kewell originally from Cornwall (who lives in New Zealand now)

Robin Kewell (Ed.): Eden. The inside story. St Austell n.d.: The Eden Project. (DVD)
Did the presenting, The doco itself is apparently 4 hours long but he cut it down to around 75 minutes.

I thought It was an amazing documentary and I hadn't really heard much about it before seeing this last night.

Most of the history behind it is explained in the wikipedia page, but one thing I found cool was that they turned down MacDonalds offer to be a part of the place, a great decision made by Tim Smit (the starting force behind the project) in my opinion

The documentary shows not just the hard work put in behind the scenes and the hurdles of building a tropical rain forest in the middle of an old china clay pit, but the success also.

I would have been happy to sit through the entire four hours of the film although 75 minutes still opened everyones eyes to this amazing place.

The possibilities of growing plants that couldn't normally, in an environment like this elsewhere is a great prospect

I would really love to visit the eden garden one day! You pay the first time and its free forever after that.

You can read more about the events that go on inside the gardens – Like musical performances, ice-skating in the winter and tropical fruit samples.

Hope this interests someone :)

The Gift http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219699/

Argh, another to add to my list of favorite movies so far.

Last night probably would have been the fifth time I've seen the film, and only the fifth time I noticed that Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson where the writers!

My family and I where talking about the fact that there are just so many amazing actors/actresses in this movie which is cool, Among them my favorite character is played by Giovanni Ribisi if you've seen the movie you know what role he plays and you'd think I'm nuts for saying he was my favorite, but he just does a crazy good job of his role.

Cate Blanchett does a great job, and Keanu Reeves does a good job of scaring most people.

My favorite part is too hard to explain so unless you see the movie with me you'll only have to guess :P

Talking about it makes me want to watch it again, so if you haven't seen it, do it!

The 4rth Season Premier of "Ghost Whisperer".
I had my doubts about Jamie Kennedy being on the show,
but I think he just might work.
Sorry to see Professor Payne (Jay Mohr) go, though.
And I have heard a rumor that Jim Clancy (Melinda's husband, played by David Conrad) might get killed this season.

Watched Man on Wire the other day. Absolutely amazing documentary...

I just saw a really powerful documentary also

Up the Yangtze
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1114277/

with the hamilton international film festival.

We took our chinese student along, who said that he would never see that kind of film in china simply because they ban them from the public so it was interesting to see what he thought of it.

It really pulled our heart strings and made you think about the impact modern society is having on people who still live in poverty.

a must, must see film.

It's amazing the quality films that come out of film festivals. I haven't seen many of the others but am planning on seeing "be kind rewind" with jack black.

I just saw a really powerful documentary the other night called Flow: http://flowthefilm.com/

This film explores the World Water Crisis. It's a really important topic. The film premiered at Sundance and was Executive Produced by Stephen Nemeth, one of our Board of Directors for the Collaboration Foundation.

Look for FLOW to be released theatrically in the next few months, and then on DVD.

Also, please take a second to sign and spread their petition to add Article 31 to the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, establishing access to clean water as a fundamental human right.

sign the petition here

Let me know if you get a chance to see this film, I'd love to hear your alls thoughts.

Sat, 08/16/2008 - 1:51pm

I saw Alien vs. Predator A Few Days Ago.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 9:57pm

Since we're on the topic..

best movies i've been with subtitles -

Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le. better known as Amelie lol
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/

And Vita è bella, La. English - Life is beautiful

both really great movies! "Amelie" is really quirky and different i've seen it about 5 times now.
and "life is beautiful" is one you have to watch, it's about how a father protects his son from the reality of the german war, it starts off as a romantic comedy and then slides into the war with some really funny bits in the romantic comedy side.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118799/combined

Oh, And run lola run http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130827/

I'm about to run..So i can't explain it :) but it's a good movie.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 9:48pm

I'll check that out!
I liked the movie Paris, J'taime! Very good movie!
And at the theaters where I am at...usualy where someone says something not funny there is always one person who laughs VERY loudly and everyone turns and looks at them...I've had that happen several times. Just recently there was a woman who was laughing like a witch purposely at all the funny parts and ppl were laughing at her lmao.

Caught a really great french thriller called Tell No One (Ne le dis a personne). I guess it was a 'romantic' thriller?

Kind of an interesting mix of genres, with some pretty original pacing and twists. The performances were also really solid.

It was written and directed by Guillaume Canet, a french actor who has been in a few US movies as well. I'm gonna have to watch some of his other flicks.

See if you can find it in a theater. Otherwise, I think the DVD comes out in a few months. Tell No One :)

Wed, 08/13/2008 - 12:17pm

I just watched.. lastnight.

Forgetting Sarah Marhsall: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800039/

At first I thought it was just another generic stoner-comedy
but after about the first 1/3 it started to have some really funny lines and made it worth while.
So overall I give it 6/10 if we were keeping score.
Too tired to do a full review ;p

The one thing I think about public cinemas is that when the people in there with you don't laugh it makes the movie seem less funny, does anyone else find that?

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 12:47am

"The one thing I think about public cinemas is that when the people in there with you don't laugh it makes the movie seem less funny, does anyone else find that?"

Yes, I agree with that! In fact, I was thinking that today when I watched Pineapple Express for the second time.

I saw Pineapple Express alone (other than other movie goers)and everyone was laughing and having a good time.

Today, I saw that movie again at the different theater with one of my good friends (and I knew the funny parts) and most of the time he was laughing, but I guess expecting the person to laugh at a certain scene can make it seem less funny (if they don't laugh). Also, the people didn't laugh nearly as much as the first time I saw it.

I really really recommend this movie though. It kinda tends to drag out...and kinda leaves you with some questions, but overall it's worth the money to go see.

James Franco (New Green Golbin/Harry Osbourne, Spider-Man 3), in my own opinion, sold the movie.

.::Scarlett::.

Thu, 08/14/2008 - 11:32am

I find this generally works the other way. In a full theater, someone will often pick up on a joke that others may have missed, and you can hear the laughter sort of ripple. Either way, laughing is contagious.

Mon, 08/11/2008 - 3:19pm

Haven't seen that one, an outside screening sounds interesting! we don't have any of those here hah.

Richard E. Grant is a great actor.

really liked him in "Jack and Sarah"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113448/

Mon, 08/11/2008 - 4:16pm

Richard E. Grant is great, and really great in this.

Some friends put the screening on; just need a projector, laptop, and a white wall. It was a bring-your-own-seat type thing :)

Mon, 08/11/2008 - 11:50am

Last night I saw an outdoor screening of Withnail & I:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094336/

I've never seen anything quite like it. The sense of humor was very original and very odd. Makes sense that it was the work of a single writer/director. Sometimes it felt a bit like a play, but that didn't bother me.

Has anyone seen this? If not, check it out!

Mon, 08/11/2008 - 12:43am

The Dark Knight 10/10
Pineapple Express 9/10 (It seemed to drag on and on)
Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D 8/10
What Happens in Vegas 6/10 (Better than I thought it would be)
The Mummy 3...it was so terrible that you couldn't even place it on a scale!

I know I've seen more I just can't think of them.

.::Scarlett::.

Fri, 08/08/2008 - 12:17am

The Dark Knight - 10/10
Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D - 8/10
The Mummy 3 - 4/10

About batman -
I have to agree with you there Captain Kundalini.
throughout the entire movie i couldn't help but think about the fact that heath is actually gone, it Defiantly made the movie, but in a way also took away from the other aspects.

I would love to hear from someone who didn't know heath had passed away and to hear what kind of experience they had watching the movie.

Last night

I saw "the mist" directed by Frank Darabont but based on the novel written by Stephen King.

"A freak storm unleashes a species of blood-thirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole-up in a supermarket and fight for their lives."

I don't know about you but when i was a kid the supermarket sounded like the best place to be stuck.

The one good thing i can say for this movie is that when people died.. they at least had a normal reaction. Generally when people die in films the directors don't focus on the emotion for very long (especially in horror films) It's more like stop drop and run.

it did have its good parts, which made you want to strangle some of the people and fight for others (interaction with the actors is a good sign :p)

If you've seen any movies based on Stephen King's novels then you know you're in for a weird trip.

the ending was a let down but i couldn't see any other way of ending it without it being completely cheesy *humans over-come alien thingys and are the only ones left standing*

** that didn't happen lol.

Also, after being horrified we went on line to find some comedians on you tube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z468B8vV6XU

Dane Cook is hilarious! Everyone should check him out.

Wow.. Too early for such long comments!

Peace, Tam

I read the Mist when I was a kid! I used to read a lot of Stephen King in junior high. I really liked how long his books were. Reading "It" felt like a huge accomplishment at the time. Plus it freaked me out pretty good.

Tue, 08/05/2008 - 12:53am

"The Dark Knight".
Truly an awsome movie. Heath Ledger's Joker was the strangest and most terrifying I have ever seen. I realize now what a terrible loss his death was. The man had incredible talent.
The Music was stirring too, from the very first. The Joker has his own "Theme" which grew gradually louder as the threat level went up. That music not only made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, it made my fillings tingle.
Harvey "Two Face" Dent was indeed Gotham's golden boy, but was easily corruptable which became apparent as he bent to less than noble means to question one of the Joker's henchmen.
Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman: Haunted at first by the tragic murder of his parents, then by Gotham's Criminal Element, the pure unadulterated evil of the psychopathic Joker and finally, by the shadow of the Batman himself.
This movie is truly a work of art.

i just saw Kung Fu Panda over the weekend. it was co-directed by Mark Osbourne, our producer #45!

Mark was my stop-mo professor at CalArts, and was at the animation event, so he helped paint a few of the frames of our film :)

If you have yet to see Mark's stop-mo indie short "More"- it's a mini-masterpiece. You can watch it here:

Well, the most recent movie I saw was an 1999 remake "Anna and the King".
It had one of my favorite actors in it, Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy on HP -- as some may know him by.) I'd love for him to join and I know he would... he is just one of those charitable guys.
I did have a personal way of contacting him, but I am not able to now...I'd have to talk to his agent.
If I ever get the chance of getting in touch with him I will let him know of the idea.

Saw Clash of the Titans 3D its pretty good and the 3D isn't as bad as everyone says it is
