What kind of server do you have the site hosted on?
We have a dedicated server/donated hosting. We thought we had prepared the site for mass traffic, but our server totally melted. apparently we weren't ready for a digg.
We are trying to optimize the site, etc.
sort of earning as we go...
Cool. Seems to be running smoothly now. Congratulations on the success! I think you have a good chance of making your goal if this keeps up.

Pair.com gave us another dedicated server to help handle the load. We will be optomizing the Apache and server over the next week, and will then start looking to expand again. If things continue at this pace we have a good chance of exceeding our goal :)
Thanks for being a part of this.

'Bringing people together, for one second.'
Hi nirvan. The site is running beautifully now. Very snappy page loads. I recently read an article on drupal.org about another website that was converted to Drupal and had to be taken off-line due to performance issues.
I've got a site that I have been working on for some time now and I hope to have online soon. However, I'm a bit concerned about the performance requirements if I start seeing some heavy traffic since I'm on a budget.
Did you guys do any optimizations besides having a second dedicated server? Perhaps if you have some time to share a few geeky details about your Digg experience, it would be helpful to other developers out there who are considering using the Drupal platform.
Best of success in your endeavors, Sean

Thanks Sean,
Glad to hear it.
Aside from another server, we have done a lot of optimizations in prep for future traffic spikes; out of the box Drupal seems to require a few key optimizations in order to scale properly. We have received a lot of tips from folks in the Drupal community who administer high traffic sites.
Our programmer (Jason Salter) has been implementing these tips and has created a set of benchmarks to measure the benefits of each optimizations we have made.
Jason is going to share all lessons learned so that other Drupal sites can benefit from our experience. We will probably submit the writeup to drupal and digg as well.
