I'd remove the comment input at the bottom of threads. It is confusing. You think you are responding and that it will be added below the last post. However, it ends up going to the top and is out of order. This is unintuitive. It may be better to set drupal so that the comment form only opens when somebody clicks reply.
Good call. I've removed the comment window; let me know if that feels better.
the way comments are displayed is a bit confusing. Drupal is powerful and flexible in a lot of ways, but forums aren't a strong point.
The way our comments work (with Drupal out of the box) is a universal setting that applies to both forum comments and comments on other pages (i.e. producer profiles). There is a choice to display new comments first or old comments first, but this applies to both the forum and profile comments. While in the forums, the intuitive choice is to view old posts first (to follow conversations), comments on profiles are generally newest first.
It might be possible to hack the code and write something that will allow a more intelligent setting for comments. i.e. something that would differentiate between comments on the forum and other pages, but this will take a little time and a programmer ($).
We definitely plan to improve our forums as we go. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yea, but now you HAVE to reply to someone when you are in their profile... and if they have no posts there, you now cannot post at all!
heads up guys!
this is a good point . can comments boxes be opened up for just the profiles nirvan?
i think it would take some custom programming. i've turned them back on for now. we could change the chronological order and see how that works. there is also a setting that lets each user choose the order they want to view comments, but it's a little clunky aesthetically.

I think changing the chronological order makes the most sense. It is just an intuitive thing that you read the earliest posts first and the replies further down. Otherwise, it is like reading a book backwards. Also, because the view is threaded and you can reply to each individual comment, it is clear when a user is replying to a specific post rather than the overall topic.
On another note, it would be good if users were able to receive email notifications when there are posts to a topic or blog they have participated in or subscribed to. I think it is best to have this turned on by default for new user accounts, with the option to turn notification off. This helps build community and gets more return visitors. Have you checked out the Notify module or other solutions?

Weirded - Take a walk on the Weird side
as far as the order of posts, i think the solution is to treat comments in profiles different from the comments in the forum.
Profile comments would be best if the newest were displayed first, while comments in the forum read better chronologically.
Another issue regarding posting comments on profiles is whether to allow a producer to post a comment on their own profile- it gets a little confusing as to where people are (or should be) responding to a comment. facebook seems to have a nice interface for their 'wall' that allows you to choose wheteher your reply is posted on both your own profile and your friends profile, but this might be pretty advanced programming that is beyond our current resources. not allowing producers to comment on their own profile would keep conversations somewhat in order.
jason and i are working on a comment notification idea; i checked out the notify module (thanks!)- but it seems like this sends out a notice whenever any content is posted across the site. a better solution would be to only notify a producer when a comment is made on their profile, and/or to have the ability to receive notification when a forum topic you are following gets updated.
some steps toward a user friendly comment system will be in our next round of site upgrades.

Hi again. The notify module is rather limited. Actually, the one I was thinking of is called Subcriptions. It is more granular:
Wow, the subscription module looks cool and appears to offer a lot of the functionality we want.
Thanks for the lead! I'm going to send it to Jason to check out. The more we can use drupals existing modules, the better.
As for site optimizations, we are currently having several of the Apache modules that we aren't using removed. This will allow our servers to serve more people.

Jason fixed it so that comments on profiles sort newest first while comments in forum posts are now in chronological order.
He also made it so that you cant post a comment on your own profile to reduce double posting. if you want to reply to a comment, it should be done on the profile of the person you are replying to.
Thanks for the suggestions.
More improvements are in the works...
