New photos of the LHC:
I think the LHC is just about the coolest thing ever. I've been follwing this since learning of it in April.
Basically. scientists are building a particle accelerator that will recreate the conditions that existed a billionth of a second after the big bang and the theoretical beginning of time as we know it.
The LHC will accelerate particles so fast that they will complete a 17 mile underground loop 11,000 times per second. Particles will Collide with other super-accelerated particles heading in the opposite direction to create explosions that generate heat 100,000 times hotter than the center of the sun. Collisions will happen in special chambers that are basically hyper-sensitive digital cameras that will take tens of thousands of photos per secongd. A decade in the making, $7 Billion dollars, 7,000 Physicists collaborting around the world, reinventing the internet into a super powerful Grid to process all the data. The scope of this is huge.
I love that it is this epic effort to find the smallest of things, the higgs boson.
Anyone else following this?
I had heard little about this before you mentioned it on the bus while streaming live.
It just shows you how powerful the internet is, and will continue to become.
quite crazy to think about
"The leviathan scale of the project is neatly juxtaposed by its goal, which is to explore the infinitely small."
