Does social media help or hamper social change?

I was reading this blog post by Vanessa Mason and thought it raised some interesting questions. Do you think people are becoming too reliant on social media to feel socially engaged?

Do you still get out and physically volunteer and interact? or has signing online petitions and adding a "cause" to your facebook page replaced your real world engagement. i'd love to hear folks thoughts on this.
