Evolution of our Fliers

Nirvan MullickI started fundraising with a flier, and used funds raised to make better fliers and marketing materials. Eventually, enough was raised to buy equipment and build our website. The project's growth can be seen through the evolution of the flier design.

This was the first flier I made. As you can see, I didn't have much in the way of graphic design skills. It was 2004. I had graduated CalArts and decided to start selling $1 producer credits to raise finishing funds for the film. I had no idea if people would respond, so I didn't spend too much time on making a flier. People's response to flier #1 was surprisingly positive, which encouraged me to make a better flier.

With flier #2, I started experimenting with photoshop, and contrast. Unfortunately, this was the best I could do. I took the design to FotoKem to borrow a photocopier to make some xerox copies. While leaving FotoKem with a stack full of these fliers, still warm from the copy machine, I spotted George Clooney in the parking lot. I got up the nerve to pitch him, and caught up to his vehicle before he drove away. He was the first person I gave flier #2 too, and the first celebrity I pitched. I wasn't able to close the deal, but I felt I could have if our marketing materials were better. I then printed some business cards to show the art, and started landing some big name producers.

With Flier #2 and the free business cards, I started landing a few celebrities. I used the photo of Tom Arnold to make a new flier that included some of our famous producer names. This flier was smaller and double sided, and slghtly better designed. I went to Kinkos to make some copies. On the way home from Kinkos, I randomly ran into Andy Dick as he was moving into his new house. I had just invested donations toward a video camera to document fundraising adventures, so I was able to give him the new flier and get a little video. This flier also made its way into the hands of Samuel Jackson, who bought his daughter Zoe a credit.

Flyer #4

I had raised enough at this point to buy a camera, and had taken a photo of Andy Dick and Samuel Jackson (who bought his daughter a credit). You can see flier #2 in both of their pics. I also designed a logo and found a place online that could print 5,000 full color double sided fliers for $250. My friend Craig and I decided to take these fliers to the Toronto Film Festival and sell more producer credits. We snuck into a party and met Tom Green, who saw on the flier that Andy Dick had donated $111.11. Tom then decided to outbid Andy, and a mini-bidding war began.

We passed a thousand producers. This flier also replaced Andy Dick with Tom Green, and added Spike Jonze to the front. The donation amounts on the back of the card were also updated. We then went to show Andy Dick the new flier, along with the footage of Tom Green from Toronto.

We made a new flier with Andy Dick back on top, and made arrangements to meet up with Tom Green again. :)

This flier added pics of Kiefer Sutherland, Pierce Brosnan, and Kevin Bacon, as well as a photo from out trip to Kipling, Saskatchewan and the One Red Paperclip housewarming party.

We made this flier for our cross-country Road to Oprah adventure. We included a photo of our bus. We had 8,700 producers at the time this flier was made.

This flier was made for our new site, and is available for online download.

We still have some of the older fliers printed out. If you would like one, mail in for a free business card and include a self addressed stamped business size envelope, and I'll mail you one (while supplies last).
