My Bio
It was early in life that Luke discovered a knack for acting, when he would lie to complete strangers on the street for no reason, he would often practice on street corners and buses. Soon he developed a growing interest in the arts, which also branched into an intense musical passion. He would play a different musical instrument every week, amusing himself by changing between styles several times a day to condition his growing techniques. Eventually he felt the right side of his brain had become appropriately limber and started concentrating on guitar, and began what he calls his 'blanc' (pronounced 'blunk') period. During his early teens he developed a very eclectic and versatile style, although he did abandon the guitar and go back to painting briefly. His unique style attracted a lot of attention and he soon developed a reputation for impromptu arguments with high profile musicians. Thus, inadvertently establishing a strong network with key members of some very influential art movements and he then started traveling the world. In the early 80's whilst a roadie for AC/DC he met the then struggling rapper Tom Green, and became known on Tom's college radio show for free-styling lyrics about political events of the time while Tom beat-boxed in the background. Luke became frustrated with Tom's antics and Tom's obsession with pyromania caused 2 studio fires which destroyed over 32 hours of recorded material so they eventually parted ways. Luke grew increasingly disenchanted with the beat-box style and in the mid 80's whilst visiting Brooklyn he discovered Adam Yauch and decided to take Adam under his wing, nicknaming him the 'Beatsie Boy from Brooklyn'. Yauch introduced Luke to 2 other kids and Luke has since described them as 'a couple of punks'> Luke also starts to get suspicious that they are exploiting his new hip hop style so he decides to concentrate on his side project with Deborah Harry and Grandmaster Flash called 'Harry, Flash & Me'. It was during this period that Deb's drinking escalated into the infamous story where Deb tried slicing Flash's ear off with a RUN DMC record, and Luke manages to save Flash's ear from being completely severed, but her increasingly erratic behaviour (including signs of paranoia) caused the trio to break up. It was during that period that Luke (who insisted on being referred to as DJ Luke) also started working with Rick James making experimental funk, and recorded a song called 'intro noir' in which on one of the interludes a young Bjork can be heard crying the tune of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity', but to this day the track remains unreleased due to copyright problems. In 1989 at the height of Luke's experimental period he was doing gigs around local bars with Mike Patton under the name of 'The Cthulhu Twins'. Despite no known recordings of the gigs, many fake audio cassettes have been known to sell on eBay for as high as $458.34AUD. Mike's inability to commit to one band and artistic differences caused Luke to opt for a solo career. Very little is known of this period but information pieced together from unconfirmed associates have said he spent two years searching his soul for new musical direction and slept in front of a local church. It was during this time he describes experiencing for the first time a 'warhellride'. These 'warhellride's increased over the following months and he says that while busking one afternoon he was struck down by the Lord with writhing fits of pain. Friends say he spent several weeks being nursed back to health by Nick Cave but Luke remembers being exorcised by the Lord. What we do know is that they immediately bonded and began touring together, establishing a signature sound of moody guitar and spiritual lyrics. The gigs were described by a former writer for Rolling Stone magazine as "the most important and influential team-up of the 90's". Nick has described Luke on stage as "a man tearing at the soul, ripping a new hole in the crowd". They were often known for wild live shows that broke countless taboos as part of an assault on popular culture. They rented out the church hall to record what has come to be known as the 'Jesus Sessions'. Controversy started when the Vatican considered it blasphemous to play 'devils music' in the house of the Lord and destroyed the master tapes before they could be mixed. A group calling themselves 'Very Angry Group In North America' have since tried getting support to find the tapes, believing they were not destroyed but instead being held somewhere in Rome instead. They are currently seeking sponsorship to visit Rome and appeal to the Pope. Luke has since moved back to Australia and been returning to his roots of painting and lying to strangers.
What are some things you're doing to help make this film?
In the privacy of my home I have been using the art of free form dance to somehow inspire interest in this project.
Why are you supporting The 1 Second Film project?
I am hoping that by giving $2USD to the making of this independent film it can secure my place in cinematic history and inspire others to join the revolution.
