History of Water

Greetings my friends.

I have made a play. It is called "The History of Water" and it is being presented at the 24th Street Theater as part of their Saturday Explorer Series... meaning that it's a cutting edge piece of theatrical joy that's recommended for ages 7 & up. Bring the family, bring your mom, bring you lover... there's something for everything in this erratic, dramatic exploration of the substance that makes up most of our planet, and most of our bodies.

The piece features performers Shaughn Buchholz, Lisa Dee, Andrea LeBlanc, and Patrick Ian Moore with musical accompaniment by JP Houston and a very special musical cameo by Artichoke's Timothy Sellers.

About my pen name

I have absolutely no reason to be an anonymous donor, however, I feel I've been given a chance to do something in the spirit of fun. And why not?

So I'll explain why I choose the name...first, I wanted something outrageous enough that I can look at the credits and say, "Hey, that's me!".

It goes beyond that. I was actually born and raised in Saskatchewan. Even though I don't live there now, I still carry her in my heart. It may not be Florida, Hawaii or Niagara Falls, but if you get a chance, go for a visit. She is a fantastic province.

The first name Barry and the last name Watson are borrowed from two people that I remember from my days at the University. Seymour...well, that's a given: Simpsons...Seymour Skinner.

There is no Forgetting, Sarah Marshall

Screenwriter and star Jason Segel is a long time member of the Judd Apatow crew, having started out on Apatow’s television shows as the memorable Nick Andoplois of Freaks and Geeks and a year later as frequent guest star Eric on Undeclared. Apatow has been on a roll with writing, directing, and producing one hit comedy film after another. Although Segel was never fortunate enough to star in any of these films he was quoted stating since Judd wasn’t writing him any lead roles he decided to do it himself. Which is how Forgetting Sarah Marshall came to be and Apatow happily produced it. Even though Segel wrote this film, his character can’t help but remind Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared fans of his previous Nick and Eric characters. He even shares a scene with Undeclared-on-screen-girlfriend Lizzie, actress Carla Gallo.

I've been hiding out for over a year now, deep in my cave, but alas, a lil' light peeks through.
I've created a website to sell my all time favorite clothing article, t-shirts. It's at NachoShirts.com.
Pretty neat huh? well that's what I've been hiding away doing. I think I might give the talkies another shot here soon too.

Hopefully I'll be back again before a years time.

This is a Tribute

I’m whupped. I missed Improv class at PCC today to work on the History of Water play that I’m writing/directing… it shows on May 10th at the 24th Street Theater and it’s really coming together nicely. We had a 4 hour rehearsal today, from 4-8pm, which featured my favorite food “Falaquitos” – an original creation by Patrick Ian Moore, my lover and boyfriend, who combined falafel, black beans, corn, carrots, black olives, cashews, sunflower seeds, avocado, seasonings, and probably some more stuff I’m forgetting into a delicious filling for a white corn tortilla-wrapped taquito grilled in olive oil. I think Lisa Dee ate 6 of ‘em! They are AMAZING.

Mentor: The Unknown Work of Nancy Lee

Form/Space Atelier Program for May 2008

Show Title: Mentor: The Unknown Work of Nancy Lee

Show Duration: May 9-June 8

Opening Reception: May 9, 6-10PM

Seattle artist and much-loved middle-school art teacher Nancy Lee died in 1990, leaving behind a fascinating but virtually unknown body of work. Following the death of her widower, Dr. Robert C. Lee, in 2006, a large number of pieces by the artist were discovered while the Lees’ home of many years was being cleared of their belongings. Mentor: The Unknown Work of Nancy Lee represents a journey by a living artist, Paul D. Natkin, into the work of a deceased artist, Lee, who was his long-time family friend and early mentor. The several works by Lee presented in this show exemplify her passion for a wide variety of materials, from the durable to the ephemeral—including canvas, watercolor paper, paper towels, scrap metal, gauze, cellophane, plywood, watercolor, oil paint, house paint, sticks, clay and mud—and her very intuitive, stream-of-consciousness approach to image-making. The pieces by Lee are shown side by side with copies of biographical documentation and written ruminations on her work by Natkin.

R.I.P., 1 Second Film Producer

-

One of our producers died today. Kenneth Keith Kallenbach was a regular on the Howard Stern Show in the 80's and 90's, and a bit of a cult celebrity. Most people wouldn't know who he was, nor should they I suppose. The end of his life was somewhat strange and controversial. He died due to complications of pneumonia after he fell ill while in police custody for a probation violation related to an alleged attempted abduction. It's a strange story, and just another example of The 1 Second Film's extraordinarily eclectic ability to connect all walks of life.

3 Shows, 1 Night, Take Your Pick

There are exciting things going on in Evangenital-land, and a LOT of them. This weekend is a Nexus of sorts, with 3 shows happening on one night - none of them Evangenitals shows - yet all of them Evangenital-related! Let me explain...

Evangenitals lead singer Juli Crockett (that's me!) has just landed a new gig singing the June Carter Cash parts in the greatest Johnny Cash tribute band ever - Cash'd Out. (http://www.myspace.com/cashdout) Evangenitals drummer George Bernardo has been drumming with them for the past year, and this Saturday night - April 19th at 11pm - I will having my debut performance with Cash'd Out at the "Belly Up" in Solana Beach, CA. If you happen to be in that part of town, I would LOVE to have some friendly faces in the crowd cheering me on!

Smart People: Makes for a smart movie choice

In Noam Murro’s directing debut of Smart People, released April 11th, he proves that some times smart people can’t always make the smartest decisions.

This slower paced movie is focused more on character development rather than action, but none-the-less it is entertaining and real because of its unique characters.

After experiencing a trauma induced seizure, a self-involved professor, Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid), must re-evaluate his life and become more dependent on others. His doctor, who happens to be one of his forgotten students from years back, Janet (Sarah Jessica Parker), informs him he is suspended from driving for six months. To his unwanted rescue, his free-loading adopted brother, Chuck (Thomas Haden Church), comes to stay for a “win-win” situation in his eyes, in which he stays for free and becomes Lawrence’s chauffer. With his visit, Chuck, tries to encourage Lawrence’s over-achieving teenage daughter, Vanessa (Ellen Page) to lighten up and for Lawrence, a widower, to get back in the game and pursue Janet as a love interest.

The Patriarchal Unconscious: From Adam’s Rib to Harvard.

This week I was a speaker in a Gender Colloquium at Rider University and I decided to include a shortened version of my speech here about Adam’s Rib, Legally Blonde, and the patriarchal unconscious connection in law and film. Enjoy.

The law is seen as an ideal system that mediates all and shouldn’t be altered; but there is the presence of the patriarchal unconscious which creates flaws in this system. The patriarchal unconscious is that unknowingly, just as males are the fathers and head of the households, males are in control of the law system and how it functions. George Cukor’s 1949 film, Adam’s Rib, is a screwball comedy about a married couple, who are also both lawyers that take on the same case defending opposite sides. Adam Bonner tries to prosecute Doris Attinger who is accused of attempting to murder her uncaring husband; while Amanda Bonner defends this woman on the basis of “equal rights under the law,” which Amanda insists if the person on trial were a man he would be vindicated for trying to kill the lover of his unfaithful wife in order to protect his home. Adam’s Rib seems to be a film fighting for women’s rights and against the biased patriarchal unconscious, but on closer analysis one can see that the message seems to lose its hold in the end when Adam wins over his wife, Amanda, and the argument is dropped

Weirdest album I've ever seen

I was looking on a shopping site and saw the most unusual album, Pat Boone: In a metal mood. Pat Boone did a metal album, that was just strange, I thought, "nobody would buy that". So after I got it in the mail I listened to it, and it was just so odd. Hearing Pat Boone performing songs like "No More Mr. Nice Guy" "Holy Diver" "Enter Sandman" and "Crazy Train" was unthinkable, it was just the strangest experience.

Ensemble Cast = A Comedy to Die for

With the awesome tagline “From director Frank Oz comes the story of a family that puts the F U in funeral” Death at a Funeral is a quirky hilarious and heartwarming story which focuses on a dysfunctional British family in the morbid setting of a funeral.

The DVD was released last month and was directed by Frank Oz who previously directed such films as The Stepford Wives, Little Shop of Horrors and The Muppets Take Manhattan and was written by Dean Craig.

In this film, all Daniel (Matthew Macfadyen) wants to do is provide a nice funeral for his father’s death but as his family and friends are gathered the services stumble upon many interruptions including one man (Peter Dinklage), a stranger to everyone except the deceased, who has a dark secret which he threatens to expose unless financially compensated. Never mind all the drama brought about by Daniel’s family members and friends: competition with his famous writer brother who’s back from the US, a friend who obsesses about his recent rash fearing it may be a deadly disease, his cousin’s fiancé hallucinating on drugs, and his handicapped, bitter pain in the arse Uncle Alfie.

Form/Space Atelier Program For April 2008

Form/Space Atelier Program For April 2008

Show Title: An Exhibit Of Robert Storr's Autograph And Other Work

Show Duration: April 11-May 4

Opening Reception Friday, April 11, 6PM

An Exhibit Of Robert Storr's Autograph And Other Work is the century mark in terms of the number of exhibits of fine art that have been curated by Paul Pauper. This exhibit pays homage to the legacy Paul Pauper established with regard to assembling massive group shows during the early part of his curatorial career. An Exhibit Of Robert Storr's Autograph And Other Work features sculpture by John Hawkley, photographs by Dan Hawkins, paintings by Stacey Chapelle and the rare and precious autograph of Robert Storr, the Dean of the Yale School of Art, critic, painter and one of the most influential people in the history of art. Bread and wine will be served at this reception, placed site-specifically on a twenty-foot-long table, covered with a solemn black cloth, intentionally representing a sacred feast. Non-alcoholic beverages, Bibi Cafe, will also be served for those unable to take the sacramental offering. Conversely, cheerful balloons will be attached to the Form/Space Atelier A-Board, site-specifically representing the profusion of balloons attached to local-area condominium sales office A-Boards. Visitors to the exhibit are encouraged to "speculate" on the meaning of both the sacramental installation and the balloon installation.

Nine Inch Nails is running a contest with their groundbreaking album release. Trent Reznor released 36 tracks recently, gave them away for free via bit torrent in high-quality drm free mp3, and sold cd's for 10 bucks, along with the standalone tracks for remixing. The contest is a video collaboration, where he is inviting anybody to create a visual counterpart for the music called Ghosts I-IV).

Here's my first submission.
Cash'd Out..

Life is full. Full full full! Almost done moving into my new place, the car broke down (but I've got a big tax return coming in that will pay for it!), LOTS of rehearsals for plays and gigs and music and improv.... and now, on Monday I'm going to be driving down to San Diego with Georgie to audition to be the June Carter for the best-ever Johnny Cash cover band "Cash'd Out". Anyone that knows me seems to think that this is the "day job" I was BORN to have... it's only a question of me not freaking out and dazzlin' them in the audition. Heck, it would be awesome to be in ANOTHER band with George Bernardo, that's for sure. :-)

Before that big day, though, I've got two shows in one night (Friday the 28th) -- Artichoke at La Casa Blue (9:30pm) and Hammerspace (my Improv team) at iO WEST (Andy Dick Experimental Black Box at 11pm)-- to get through. It's a lot, and I'm loving it.

Saturday and Sunday we have to officially finish moving, clean out the old apartment (throw a couple of rehearsals and a class show for our Improv class on Sunday) and turn in the keys Monday morning. Then, at around 1pm I'm jumping in a car with Georgie to head down to San Diego... and DESTINY! In the meantime, I've got all my Johnny and June tunes on repeat play and I'm getting ready for greatness.

Say a prayer for me. :-)

- Juli

Run Fatboy Run: Three Comedies in One

My official blog page: http://shaboomer.wordpr...

I’m very excited about Run Fatboy Run which opens in theaters this Friday 3/28. It was originally released in the UK in September of 2007 and was supposed to be released in the US in December of 2007 but was delayed a few times and now will finally be out in the US this weekend. The film topped the UK box office in its opening week and remained at the top of the chart for four straight weeks. To date it has earned over £10.5 million. Hopefully it will gain similar success here in the US.

The plot of the film focuses on Dennis (Simon Pegg) a slightly overweight and childish middle-aged man who left his pregnant fiancée of five years at the alter. He regrets this action and wants her back but she is now happily with an American played by Hank Azaria. In order to prove himself and win his ex-fiancée back he’s decided to show that he can be dedicated by committing to a Nike River-run marathon in London. Now he must train with the help of his friend Gordon played by Pegg’s good friend Dylan Moran (Shaun of the Dead).
