Celebrities Join Thousands to Produce Biggest Shortest Film Ever Made
LOS ANGELES, CA – Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Pierce Brosnan, Christina Ricci, and Stephen Colbert are just a few of the dozens of celebrities that have joined over 7,500 people from 45 countries to produce a 70mm film that will last only one second.
The innovative non-profit collaboration, aptly titled “The 1 Second Film,” creatively utilizes the internet to enable anyone in the world to become a film producer along with major stars, simply by donating $1 or more via the film’s website: www.the1secondfilm.com
“A lot can happen in one-second,” says Nirvan Mullick, an award-winning director turned social-entrepreneur, who started the film 7 years ago while a student at California Institute of the Arts. A single second of animation consists of 24 frames of film. In this case, each frame is a giant collaborative mural painted by hundreds of people.
Nirvan began fundraising after graduating, setting out to bring the world together for one second. With no budget and a simple Xeroxed flier he began pitching the film to anyone he met. His first celebrity pitch was to George Clooney, whom he ran into in a Burbank parking lot. “I was pretty nervous,” Nirvan admits, “Clooney passed, but later I got a dollar from a lady at the grocery store.”
After that initial encounter, Nirvan continued to improve his marketing materials and his 1 Second pitch. Hundreds more donated and soon even randomly encountered celebrities started chipping in. Christina Ricci, met on a sidewalk, donated $5.50, Spike Jonze became a $12 producer at a movie theater, and Tom Arnold gave $100 outside of the Hollywood Guitar Center.
Nirvan made a website listing the celebrity and non-celebrity producers in order of amount donated. Word spread virally, and thousands around the world began donating online. Dozens of Christina Ricci fans have since given $5.51 to be listed above the star, while comedians Tom Green ($220.00) and Andy Dick ($211.11) are engaged in an escalating battle for top billing.
After raising over $160,000 of a $1,000,000 goal, the production recently launched it’s own online social-network, giving its thousands of producers unique profiles. “Imagine if everyone on MySpace was making a movie together,” says Nirvan, “that’s the goal. Micro-collaboration.”
“I love what these guys are doing, and the way they are doing it,” says Kiefer Sutherland, one of the film’s top Executive Producers, who recently donated $600.23 at a restaurant.
With thousands of producers, from gas-station attendants to the director of Independence Day, the film’s end credits will last an astounding 90-minutes. A star studded “making of” documentary will accompany the feature-length credits, detailing the (often absurd) adventures of bringing the world together for one-second. All profits raised by The 1 Second Film will be donated to charity.
A two-second film is already in development (The 2 Second Film). For more information please visit www.the1secondfilm.com or email press@the1secondfilm.com
it's been over a year since i made a new flier for The 1 Second Film. But we are starting to run low, plus the flier needs an update. So today I updated the last version of our flier, and sent this off to the printer:
here is the new back:

With all the festivals, fundraisers, and street pomoting, we have almost used up all of our old fliers, and we will need more for the summer. You can get 5,000 full-color fliers printed on both sides for $175 at a place called clubflyers.com. They are the cheapest I've found. I used the cheapest shipping, so the fliers should get her sometime next week.
I forgot about this, but for folks in Portland, there is a free screening of one of my animated short films tonight, as part of a program called "Cartoons From HELL!"curated by an amazing indie animator, Pat Smith. There are some really great animators; Bill Plympton, Don Hertzfeld, Pat, etc. I'm pretty stoked to have my short in there. A lot of the animators will be at the screening- wish I could be there, but I'm burried. Check it out or pass along to folks in Portland. it's Free :)
we just had a ridiculously fun weekend. here are some pics. thanks to everyone who came out and became a part of this. 8-Bit rocked, and auctioined off a pair of their robot pants for $80 to help us out. we raised over $600 after paying security. TED-LA was awesome; sold out theater, packed with smart people looking to make a better world. really inspiring. I was nervous talking in front of all those people! i got through it, and people really laughed and got into it, and got some really great advice/conversations/ potential help from people after. + some new producers :) almost to 7,500! i want to write more but i gotta run.

This has been a big week; tons of work. Was up til 6am last night, a few hours sleep, then back at it. Sent out newsletter #4 yesterday with a bunch of updates.
Most exciting thing lately is that Juli Crockett quit her $35 hour job to come work here full time for waaay less. Juli has already been a huge help; she punched up our press release and we are woking on sponsor packets and road trip plannin. Plus a 5 phase business plan, timelines, a new flier, website improvements, etc. etc. it really helps to have a new set of eyes editing all the writing involved with this project.

a volunteer crew of 10 producers canvassed the Farmers Market at The Grove in LA on Saturday. It was a fun and interesting experiment. We handed out fliers and talked to people about the project; a few even donated to become producers.
Joining our street team were gianelle, juli, patrick, aaron, kristen & matt, anna (a new volunteer recently moved from england), fiona, and flora (our youngest @ 14). we were quite the mob, handing out fliers for The 1 Second Film.
It was interesting to hit the streets and promote with such a big group. We are going to be hitting some other spots over the summer; Venice Beach will probably be next.

We went out to the South Pasadena Farmer's Market yesterday and set up our stand. Juli and Levi helped set the stand up and we met with members of the Evangenitals, and Mike B came out and ran camera for a bit. We met some really cool people and got some nice footage; also we will be adding another batch of producers.
We were set up off to the side of the market, so foot traffic was pretty slow. We ended up grabbing some clipboards and some fliers and just walking around, meeting people and talking about the project. A couple dozen folks donated, and we raised another drop in the bucket- just $35 actually, which is pretty comical accounting when you consider how long it took 3 of us to set up and transport our stand. But it's something of a performance art, getting out there for a second. Juli and I were talking about the backwards economics of this project; we would have raised a lot more money selling lemonade, but this isn't about the dollar as much as the process.
I'm looking for suggestions on what others are doing for fund-raising for this project. I'm new here. Thanks!!
